This piece was motivated by the reactions of two young boys to the news that their father might be sent away with the army to the Persian Gulf. Summer Dreams of Winter's Headlines is a tone poem that tells the story of a young boy who walks down a country lane on a summer's day to go fishing at a sparkling pond shimmering with fish. He disturbs frogs at the water's edge, who hop into the waters with a number of splashes. The boy casts his fishing rod and the lure splashes into the water, causing ripples to start and widen on the surface. On the final cast, the boy watches the lure descend into the shimmering depths, down, down, down; he dozes off with a heart full of sparkling, soothing, summery feelings. In the distance, the young boy's friends are playing army games. Muted bugles call from afar and the young boy, in his dreams, recalls the horrors of war, the headlines of conflict and destruction from the winter past. The present and past blur and the conflict of the summer day and the winter memories compete for dominance in the young boy's dream. The boy is brought from his night mare by the fishing reel, which spins out and splutters to a halt as the prey gets away. The boy sits stunned, trying to decide which of the two conflicting settings is the real present.
