This musical collage is a tribute to special relationship that exists between the United States (US) and Ireland (Erin). Each of the melodies set within comes from the folk heritage of one of the countries. The tunes are traded about by groups of musicians placed around the room, symbolic of the distance between the lands. The final hymn is presented by one unified ensemble.
Mm. 22-56. Boolavogue is about the 1798 Rebellion in Co. Wexford.
Mm. 58-81. Shenendoah - traditional American chantey.
Mm. 81-116 When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again celebrates the return of the war soldier from the American Civil War.
Mm. 116-117. Bagpipes or other folk instruments may play any tune in Bb. In this recording, the composer's favorite pipe tune, Let Erin Remember, is used.
Mm. 119-end. The Streams of Bunclody's words are actually supposed to have been written by a Bunclody emigrant who sent them back from the United States during the 1820's. The tune is traditional and believed to be much, much older.
